Not for the 'Bloopers' which are actually just missed cues and line flubs - more embarrassing to look at than funny. In fact, they aren't funny at all, just painful to watch. Dark Shadows was a soap opera shot in the manner of the day - that is, they performed the show as if it were broadcast live, with very few retakes ever, so the flubs made it on the air. That said, there is a lot - I mean A LOT - to like about this DVD release. Game show fans will cheer at the segments from The Generation Gap (1969) with guests Jonathan Frid and other DS notables. I wish they had included whole episodes but this is the first I've seen of this rare, short-lived daytime game (we also see Frid, Joan Bennett and 'The Wolfman' in segments in three episodes What's My Line from 1970 with Soupy Sales, Gene Rayburn & Sandy Baron). Another great feature - tunes from the Dark Shadows soundtrack (an album that I owned as a kid). This was a lush, beautifully produced LP; the DVD producers have created music videos to go with some the songs and they work quite well. Also, Lara Parker (Angelique on DS) takes a tour of Salem, MA, there are some promo spots and behind the scenes video as well. I enjoyed this very much. By the way, MPI has the entire Dark Shadows series out on DVD now. TV on DVD Reviews: |

Carol Burnett Show on DVD
FEATURES YOU MIGHT ENJOY: Plot
Synopsis: Dark Shadows is a gothic soap
opera, which follows the strange happenings to the Collins family
and their surrounding friends. The show features everything from Vampires,
to Witches, werewolves... you name it. These
were the golden years for Dark Shadows. Each
disc in this DVD collection offers up 2 weeks of episodes, there are
4 discs per release a full 2 months of continuity plus new bonus cast
interviews. These
are some of the best storylines of Dark Shadows' long run
and there's plenty of witchcraft, evil spells, a disembodied hand,
possessed paintings and other spookiness. The sensitive
vampire Barnabas Collins travels back to 1897 but he's being held
prisoner in his coffin; Angelique tricks werewolf Quentin into marriage;
and before long Julia Hoffman in 1969 is transported back in time
to rescue Barnabas. If you've
not sampled Dark Shadows before this is a good place to start
- or you can go back to Barnabas' first episodes or Quentin's first
shows for an equally wild ride. Because
it was a daily soap opera, the production quality is not up to primetime
standards but the offbeat scripts and likable actors playing bizarre
characters more than make up for it. The colors are vibrant and the
spectacular dark, moody music adds to the wonderfully campy creepiness
Dark Shadows possess. A great
way to waste away the hours.
