It was on in the afternoons, my friend Chuck and I would watch Maude every day and laugh our asses off. Watching the first season's episodes in order, it's clear that the show actually gets better as the season goes along and the production finds its voice. Boisterous and brash, this was Norman Lear's takedown of the 1970's liberal point of view (the flip side to All in the Family); truly one of the funniest sitcoms of the 1970s that gets more hilarious as the season goes along when the writers finally find their voice. The introduction of Florida Evans was a priceless moment in TV history (Good Times was a spin-off of Maude) while the shrill political arguments that pepper these episodes sound like they could take place today. Other highlights include the two-part abortion episode, pill-popping Maude trying to score some pot, and her reunion with a high school chum who's now a high flying executive, another opportunity to skewer Bea Arthur's outlandish character and her blatant hypocrisy. This might be considered Norman Lear's greatest work, his best but least seen series. In terms of history, Maude wasn't TV's first liberated woman but this was the first series about a self avowed feminist. Netflix this one - but you may want to own it as reruns of Maude are rare. FEATURES YOU MIGHT ENJOY: Plot Synopsis: This "All In The Family"
spin-off centers around Edith's cousin, Maude Findlay. She's a liberal
independent woman living in Tuckahoe, NY with her fourth husband Walter;
owner of Findlay's Friendly Appliances, Carol Trainor; Maude's divorced
daughter from her 2nd marriage and Philip; Carol's son. Other characters
included: Dr. Arthur Harmon; Walter's conservative best friend from
their Army days. He and Maude were always at odds when it came to politics
and just about everything, Vivian Cavender-Harmon; Maude's naieve
best friend from their college days who married Harmon in season three;
During the show's run, Maude had gone through three maids during the
series run: Florida Evans, Nell Naugutuck and Victoria Butterfield.
Mrs. Naugutuck and Florida, however, were the most memorable. Although it was a situation comedy, it dealt with
serious and often controversial issues, much like Norman Lear's other
shows "All In The Family" "One Day At a Time"
and "Good Times." DVD Features:
