Picket Fences - Season One Picket Fences is an hour-long dramedy centered around the strange happenings in the small town of Rome, Wisconsin. Having not seen this show before, all I knew was that the critics at the time loved it. I was hoping not to be disappointed and I wasn't. David E. Kelley produced the first season of Picket Fences and wrote many of the best episodes. The show ran for four seasons (1992-1996) leading to future David E. Kelley triumphs like Boston Public, The Practice, Ally McBeal, Chicago Hope and others (he had just come from creating LA Law and Doogie Howser, M.D. so if you liked those shows check this one out). The entire cast sizzles, striking the perfect notes - even the kids are fine actors and not cloying. How often does that happen? Co-stars Tom Skerritt and Kathy Baker both won Emmy Awards for Best Actor while the show itself won for Best Dramatic Series for this first year. That's a rare phenomenon as well. Besides the wonderful supporting players that include Zelda Rubinstein, Dabbs Greer and Ann Morgan Guilbert, the show also featured Ray Walston (My Favorite Martian) in one of his finest roles of a long and distinguished career. One of the few shows that can be genuinely funny and dramatic at the same time, Picket Fences Season 1 offers up twisty legal entanglements worthy of the best TV courtroom dramas and medical dilemmas that one might expect out of ER. The unexpected storylines never fail to amaze, like the humorous but thought provoking episode with Della Reese as a blues singer close to death, saved by an organ transplant from a pig. As a bonus there's a pleasing documentary that covers the series with writer/producer David E. Kelley and actors Tom Skerritt, Kathy Baker, Adam Wylie (and almost the entire cast) and other insiders. Picket Fences - Season One offers all 20 episodes of one of the best TV series of all time for a mere $42.00 if you order now from Amazon. That's 30% off with no sales tax and free shipping - and for a limited time you get a FREE TV show download from Amazon Unbox. I'll look forward to watching more from this collection as the summer progresses. TV on DVD Reviews:
