Danny Thomas was a most unlikely TV dad, gruff and impossibly short with the kids by modern standards, but his show was an opportunity to bring on guest stars and unusual characters, that's what made this series one of the most revered and best loved of TV's golden age. The history of Make Room For Daddy is a bit confusing but in 1958-59 (the season this DVD covers) this series was actually called The Danny Thomas Show, it was year three of the new format after the actress who originally played his wife left the program. In 1958 The Danny Thomas Show was the number 5 rated show in the nation, in its second season since moving from ABC to CBS with the permanent addition of Marjorie Lord and Angela Cartwright as Danny's new wife and daughter. This collection is loaded with major guest stars. Jack Benny is seen on the first episode followed by Dinah Shore, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Bob Hope, Frankie Laine, Shirley Jones, Annette Funicello and others. The episode guest-starring Lucy & Desi is an unmitigated joy and occasionally the wonderful Amanda Randolph (Amos 'n' Andy) pops up as the maid. I heartily recommend this DVD set not only for the 32 thoroughly entertaining episodes but the bonus features as well, including new interviews with Sid Melton, Marjorie Lord and Angela Cartwright. DVD producers take note: This is the way star interviews should be presented, without the annoying highlight clips punctuating every other sentence; they spoil the rewatchability of the episodes. I prefer the straightforward presentation offered here, simple and much more enjoyable that the overwrought graphics and endless theme song transitions that mar so many interviews on DVD. In the funny and revealing Blooper Reel you get to see what a taskmaster Danny Thomas must have been when the cameras were off. Wait until you see tiny, 7-year old Angela Cartwright trying to get through a complicated cereal commercial, what a trouper she was. Come to think of it, she looks great in the interview, I wonder why producers aren't using this beloved performer more? This is a wonderful collection of one of TV's finest sitcoms at its peak, the episodes look and sound fantastic throughout and it's nice to see these shows with the original opening and not cut to shreds like the dollar store DVDs (or even the season 5 release of a few years ago from a different company). Make Room For Daddy rockets you back in time, an honest to goodness classic with the right mixture of laughter and heart. Classic TV DVD Reviews: |

Make Room For Daddy - Season 6 Format:
Box set, Color, Dolby, DVD-Video, Full Screen, NTSC Product
Description The series was a reflection of Danny Thomas' own life as an entertainer and the problems created by the frequent absences from his children. Even the title came from a phrase used in the real-life Thomas household: whenever Danny returned from a tour, his 2 daughters (Marlo and Terre) had to shift bedrooms to "Make Room For Daddy". In the series, Danny plays nightclub entertainer Danny Williams, an occasionally loud and cantankerous, but ultimately warm and soft-hearted master of his domain. Constantly being upstaged by his bratty but loveable kids, played by Rusty Hamer, Angela Cartwright and Sherry Williams (whose role was taken over by Penny Parker), the ensemble also included beautiful Marjorie Lord as his understanding wife, and legendary character actor Hans Conreid as irascible Uncle Tonoose. "Make Room For Daddy" was unique for many reasons, including how it portrayed the family life of an entertainer dealing with both industry and ordinary family issues. Another reason was its frequent appearances by top celebrities. In this Season 6 boxed-set, William Demarest, Jack Benny, Dinah Shore, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Shirley Jones, and Bob Hope are but a few legendary performers lending their talents. In addition, upcoming stars had recurring roles, such as Tony Bennett as Danny's cousin Steven from Toledo, and Annette Funicello as Italian exchange student Gina Minelli. "Make Room For Daddy" served as a springboard for then little known talents like Joey Bishop and Bill Dana, both of whom wound up with their own Danny Thomas produced television series. Other Thomas produced series include the Dick Van Dyke Show, Gomer Pyle, Real McCoys and Mod Squad. Actors: Danny Thomas, Jean Hagen, Marjorie Lord, Rusty Hamer, Sherry Jackson, Angela Cartwright

Room For Plot Synopsis: Danny Williams, a successful nightclub singer, encounters a variety of difficult or amusing situations in trying to balance his career with his family; his outspoken wife Cathy, teenage daughter Teri from his first marriage, children Russ and Linda, and old-fashioned Uncle Tonouse. Later episodes feature Annette Funicello as an au pair girl. Most episodes conclude with a song by Danny or one of the children. Affection expressed as hostility ("I love you, you little jerk") and ironic humor characterize this show. Actors: Danny Thomas, Jean Hagen, Marjorie Lord, Rusty Hamer, Sherry Jackson, more...
