George of the Jungle This flashy and attractively designed DVD set collects those wonderfully wacky Jay Ward cartoons from 1967 as opposed to the new George of the Jungle that recently debuted on Comedy Central to huge numbers. These joyously absurd cartoons are a pure delight to watch. Each episode of George of the Jungle contains an adventure with George, one with Super Chicken and another with Tom Slick. Of course, George was a take off on those old Tarzan movies and Super Chicken spoofed the super hero craze that was in full swing in 1967. Tom Slick, the race car driver who always played it fair and square no matter how blatantly his opponents cheated, was clearly an inspiration for the Wacky Races cartoons of the 1970s. If you loved Rocky & Bullwinkle you're sure to like this one, a super-sixties delight from start to finish with many laugh out loud moments and a plethora of delightfully bad puns (Receding Airlines?). It's also nice to have something that parents and children alike will enjoy but don't blame me if you find yourself with these clever theme songs knocking around in your head all week - they're 3 of the most memorable tunes in TV history. Although George of the Jungle didn't quite catch the public's attention the way Bullwinkle did, these shows were very popular. Only one season was produced but those 17 episodes were rerun relentlessly for three additional years on Saturday and Sunday mornings. George and company even popped up again on Saturdays for short runs in 1992 and 1995. That says something about how much fun these shows are and how timeless the humor is. This is a high quality product with 2 DVDs in a solid book format containing all 17 colorful episodes plus the previously unseen George of the Jungle and Super Chicken pilots that are quite a bit different that the final product (for one thing, Hans Conried narrated the George adventure.) They've all been gloriously restored and remastered, the shows look and sound fantastic, much better than they did back in the day. Highly recommended! TV on DVD Reviews: |

FEATURES YOU MIGHT ENJOY: George
of the Jungle Format: Animated, Color, DVD-Video,
Full Screen, NTSC In 1997, George of the Jungle was adapted into a live
action film starring Brendan Fraser. One of
the greatest cartoons created for television in the 1960s was George
of the Jungle from the folks who brought us Bullwinkle.
George was funny and smart in the Jay Ward Productions' tradition
but lasted only one season of new episodes.
Now
George of the Jungle is back in a new production headed by
Jay Ward's daughter for Comedy Central's new nighttime schedule for
kids. I just watched the first two episodes which debut beginning
next Friday night. Of
course, everything's been pleasingly redesigned to fit the modern
sensibility (John K. changed everything, didn't he?) while the iconic
theme song remains - with minor changes. It's wacky and weird like
the original, but kids today are used to what was considered cutting
edge 41 years ago - audience asides, random pop culture references
- so the new George and his animal cohorts are more extreme in their
behavior while the storylines are more straightforward.
