Every season they lose about 25% of their quality. 24 is a textbook example of that formula in play. The Shield somehow sailed through four seasons with no discernable drop in quality (same with The Wire) and season 5 proves it's still one of the best dramas of all time. No question, television drama is undergoing a new golden age and The Shield leads the pack, as strong in season five as season one. Season five explodes out of the gate with a riot in a funeral home and then gets even more outrageous; the storylines pack so much emotional punch they keep you riveted, leave you devastated. The previous year Glenn Close was brought in to shake things up and it seemed that this group of actors cast stepped it up a notch, if that was possible. This season Forest Whitaker joined the cast to torment our 'heroes' and the results are equally spectacular. It's a roller coaster ride of outrageous behavior so tightly directed, so finely written that it's ultimately bullet proof - mainly because the characters are so clearly drawn at this point they are a pleasure to watch under any circumstance. Somehow they've kept the original cast together and when new ones are thrown in the mix it's like adding cold water to hot grease. Actually the show loses one veteran cast member during season 5, upping the already impossible ante for Vic Mackey when Season 6 began on FX in April, 2007. If you haven't yet experienced The Shield, I can only tell you that you're missing out big time. I suggest you start with season one - you may find yourself hooked like I am, waiting impatiently for the next season's DVD release. (I won't catch it when it's broadcast - it's too good not to watch two or three episodes at a sitting so I'll wait for the DVDs. It's drama to be savored.) As if all 12 episodes on four discs isn't enough (and it is) there is a mountain of extras including commentary on every episode, 25 deleted scenes with commentary by Shawn Ryan, The Shield Television Academy panel and more. An incredible DVD collection worth every cent - considering all the action and drama you get, it's the deal of the year for $40 (no sales tax and free shipping) if you order now.
