Rock of Love - Season One Take one badly aging former rocker supposedly looking for "love" and add 25 slutty chicks who'll do anything to fuck a rock star and be on TV - you've got VH1's notorious train wreck of a show Rock of Love. The first thing that came to my mind when I placed the first disc in the player was: Season One? How many true loves will Poison's Bret Michaels be looking for? How many seasons did VH1 sign him for? Although he airbrushes beautifully, Bret no longer has a face, just a loosely connected collection of jowls. He looks great on the heavily retouched box art, like a lovely, young female porn star but what's up with all the hats and bandanas covering Bret's forehead throughout? I'm guessing he has no hair there, that those long blond locks must flow from the top of his scalp. I kept wondering what he would look like without the colorful head gear - a balding, overweight, makeup encrusted, middle-aged man trying desperately to look youthful is my guess. The 25 girls and Bret all cohabitate in a television studio tackily dressed up to look vaguely what a fan might imagine Bret's home to be like. The 'dates' are merely a series of (probably paid for) promotional opportunities for various businesses, like those outings on Extreme Dating. You know, going to stores, restaurants and open to the public recreational places. There's no real excitement surrounding Bret that isn't highly contrived, like when Bret plays with "his band" on his big Vegas gig it's clear he's fronting a cover band. And of course, Bret's banging some of these sluts when we're not looking; one girl calls out another (in front of her uptight parents) for giving the host oral sex in plain view. The primary focus of this show is on the catfights and they are spectacular. And no wonder. The alcohol (and God knows what else) flows freely to make sure everyone acts as hideously as possible. The producers have fastened together an explosive mix of loose female archetypes, it's like a high school cafeteria mashup. At least of couple of these gals aren't just extreme alcoholics acting up they're seriously mentally deranged. I gotta give credit to Bret Michaels for one thing - he may have been fucked up throughout a good portion of these shows (and hung over as well) be he stayed a lot more sober that New York did on I Love New York. I don't want to give you the impression that I didn't enjoy Rock of Love, I devoured the entire thing over the course of 2 days. While I was more or less enthralled I had that same feeling I get when I eat 6 Krispy Kreme doughnuts in a sitting - satisfied but somewhat sickened. You can't watch just one. Also included on this three disc set is the revealing but not terribly entertaining reunion show and footage not seen in the series if you just have to have more. Will you continue to rock my world, Bret? TV on DVD Reviews: |
