This nicely produced CBC syndicated series from 1957 takes place in post-Revolutionary times and is very loosely based on the James Fenimore Cooper's classic novel of the same name. It's extremely lightweight and fun in a Saturday morning serial kind if way - for the most part a straightforward pioneer folks vs. the Indians type of thing. The show stars John Hart as Hawkeye and Lon Chaney, Jr. as his trusted native friend Chingachgook, Hawkeye's blood brother who's tomahawk gets "thirsty" from time to time. In the excellent first episode that sets up the series, 'Hawkeye's Homecoming,' the massive fight scenes and the trashing of the fort are very well executed, there is a great deal of action and genuine thrills. The stories are well written for the period; a pleasing, uncomplicated period drama. Look for guest stars like Michael Ansara and Frank Dekova in that first episode. The production is fairly elaborate with dozens of extra players and some impressive photography as much of the action was shot in the great Canadian outdoors. This show was also seen under the title Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans. I enjoyed this much more that I thought I would. The picture and sound are superb in this very inexpensive DVD set even without considering the show's age. TV on DVD Reviews: |

FEATURES YOU MIGHT ENJOY: Edgar Buchanan (Petticoat Junction) stars
as the irascible legendary frontier Judge who came to tame a town
and bring law and order to the good folks in Langtry, Texas, the toughest
portion of the west according to the show's opening. The Judge solves the town's problems with wit and
gunplay if necessary. According to legend, Judge Roy Bean (aka the
'Hanging Judge') held court in his saloon along the Rio Grande but
this incarnation doesn't sell booze, he's a kindly storekeeper. There's
little authenticity here but that's expected of a TV series from 1956. Seen frequently were western greats Lash LaRue, Russell
Hayden, X. Brands (Yancy Derringer) and Glenn Strange (Gunsmoke).
The series was filmed in color (very rare for this time) at Frontiertown,
California whatever that was. It's all enjoyable fun in the way those simple TV
westerns were. Nothing too exciting but pleasurable enough. Fans of
horse operas or Edgar Buchanan will enjoy it especially considering
the low price - about 6 bucks for a two disc 10 episode collection. These episodes are mildly amusing and the picture
and sound look quite clean. Aspect Ratio: 1.33:1
