Hawaii Five-0 - The Third Season At a time when TV dramas tended to last 3 or 4 years at best, Hawaii Five-O was so popular it ran for 12 years. There are fans who consider Hawaii Five-O to be one of the best TV dramas of all time. Now season three arrives on DVD, it's so hot it's one of the best selling TV on DVD releases right out of the gate. This was the year (1968) that Hawaii Five-O broke into the top 20; by 1972 it was the third most popular show in the nation and remained a ratings winner for the next 5 seasons. It was so seminal that 5-O has entered the vernacular as slang for police. For the most part Hawaii Five-O is strictly a standard late-1960s TV drama with overblown music and bad overdubs but it is what it is. For me, there's an awful lot of talking and way too much exposition. I guess you didn't want to excite the home audience too much in the evening. Jack Lord as McGarrett is rock solid, his overblown acting style is perfect
for the way too many talking scenes but at least he holds your interest
as does Khingh Dhiegh as Wo Fat, a very effective villain that lurks behind
many of the nefarious plots 5-O comes up against. You get the entire third season in one DVD collection everything looks clear, colorful and sharp. Martin Sheen, Simon Oakland, Diana Muldaur, William Schallert, Joan Van Ark, John Vernon, Anne Archer, Sorrell Booke, Royal Dano, Roger C. Carmel, Vera Miles, Pernell Roberts and other supporting players turn up in season 3. Highlights include Nancy Wilson's amazing star turn in an unusually sharp episode about a junkie blues singer, this is not to be missed if only for the musical performances. (For those who want to Netflix this episode it appears on disc 1.) One nifty bonus are the episode promos that can be played with the episode or watched all together. I like that. This is perfect lazy day TV viewing, ideal for laconic days at the beach. Format: Box set, Color, DVD-Video, NTSC TV
