Annie Oakley Annie Oakley aired on ABC Saturday mornings between 1959 until 1960 (and in syndication before that) then popped up again from 1959-1960. It's one of the better westerns of the period, nearly as good as The Adventures of Superman. In fact, Annie Oakley uses a lot of the same eerie music cues that the Superman series utilized during its first season. Creepy and very effective. This show was a spin off of Gene Autry's popular television program and the best Annie Oakley episodes are first season shows, by far. They're grittier and shot more in the rocky canyons and out in the desert. Later years were shot more on a TV ranch, making the show look and feel more city-fied; they are neither as visually or viscerally as interesting after year one. Gail Davis is a thrill as sharp shooter Annie, she plays the role with just the right amount of sugar and spice. Annie never shoots people, only inanimate objects like guns out of criminals hands and doorknobs. And she's generally smarter than the men around her, one of the rare strong gals on TV in the fifties. In this show women and kids are the folks that get things done. Though aimed primarily at kids of the period (most TV westerns were) Annie Oakley really is a lot of fun in that 1950's horse opera kid of way. The DVDs come with the show's original sponsored themes, the production values are pretty darn good and the storylines strong. At least it doesn't insult your intelligence and has a lot of heart. One notable regular is a young Brad Johnson who turned up in numerous John Wayne westerns, familiar supporting players like Denver Pyle and Glenn Strange also pop up frequently. If you love 1950's westerns or early Saturday morning shows I think you'll find Annie Oakley is a very satisfying experience. Unfortunately the best collection is from Timeless Media and it's not available any longer. That was a 2 disc collection of 10 public domain episodes but they looked quite good, very clean. As far as any of the other collections, I have no idea their picture or sound quality.
