Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip The 2006-07 season will be remembered for many things, not least of which being the year NBC scheduled 2 shows centered around a Saturday Night Live-type program - one a half-hour sitcom, the other an hour long dramedy. Studio 60 is the hour show starring Friend's Matthew Perry and an all-star supporting cast that includes Bradley Whitford, Amanda Peet, Sarah Paulson, Steven Weber, D. L. Hughley, Nate Corddry and Timothy Busfield. That's a great collection of performers especially when mixed with the remarkable guest stars that turn up including Ed Asner as the the head of the conglomerate that owns the network, Rob Reiner, Howie Mandel, Masi Oka, Jason Alexander, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sting, John Goodman, Peyton Manning and Renée Zellweger, among many others. Like Entourage, Studio 60 takes you inside the television industry for a scathing glance at the most peculiar business on earth. Of course, it's a situation that leads to natural laughs and some ridiculously self involved dramatic tension. The program, produced by Aaron Sorkin of West Wing fame, wowed the critics. The Chicago Tribune declared, "Studio 60 is not just good, it has the potential to be a small-screen classic." The Detroit Free Press raved, "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip is another Sorkin mother lode of stylish wit, uncompromising quality and timely, topical substance. It's TV with a brain for viewers in search of something other than the same old, same old." The San Francisco Chronicle said it was, "one of the best new broadcast series of the fall." Studio 60 had to settle for critical acclaim but few viewers while rival 30 Rock flourished and was renewed. Still, Studio 60 is compelling and vastly entertaining in its own way. Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip may be gone but it will always live on for devotees with this first class DVD release that contains all 22 episodes of the series along with a few bonus features like an informative and breezy audio commentary by the producers on the pilot episode and a mini-documentary.
