This is a surprise to me really. I honestly didn't think I'd enjoy watching this show again; after The Shield and The Wire how can something as lightweight as Adam-12 possibly hold up? Adam-12 was one of the TV shows my family watched together, back in the days when all of television was wholesome fare. It's hardly heart-pounding excitement, this half hour drama is pretty tame stuff especially by today's standards. But the Los Angeles locales circa 1972 are a thrill for me (I moved to LA in 1979). In fact, the first episode was shot in and around Venice, wait until you see how shabby the canal looks. It ain't like that now! And there's something reassuring about the moral certainty and the straightforward storytelling in this Jack Webb (Dragnet) production. No loose plot threads here. Everything is happily resolved at episode's end, good always triumphs on Adam-12. Stephen J. Cannell (The A-Team) came on board this season as head writer but nothing's radically changed from the first three seasons, by this point the show was a solid top ten hit for NBC. There are plenty of familiar 1970's TV day players to spot - including Ozzie Nelson who discovered Adam-12 co-star Kent McCord back when he and Harriet ruled the airwaves; also look for the great Jack Sheldon as a hapless driver and Stubby Kaye as a used car salesman, both in the same episode. Not to mention the classic cars that were common on the roads. Autos that stretched back into the fifties were still being used as daily drivers, making the byways a lot more interesting to look at than today's homogenous roadways. The transfers are a little grainy at times but overall everything looks and sounds great, this DVD set covers the 1971-72 season. TV on DVD Reviews: |
