SHOWS JOURNEYMAN This thrilling drama is centered around newspaper reporter Dan Vassar, a guy who unwillingly jumps back in time in order to alter the course of people's lives. Just how and why this is is a mystery to our confused hero who disappears for days at a time much to the dismay of his wife and employer. On the pilot episode Vassar inexplicably jumps back and forth into past decades to save a guy from a suicide attempt. Of course, as we know from past sci-fi dramas and that episode of The Simpsons, changing the past can lead to unintended consequences. I don't want to give too much away because you'll want to experience this one for yourself, suffice to say even folks that normally detest science fiction will find Journeyman a wild, ultimately satisfying trip. Thanks to Kevin McKidd's intensity and a brilliant first script this series crackles with an intense fervor, at times both chilling and funny. No question, Journeyman is one of the best TV shows you'll see this fall with a twisty storyline and an emotion-packed ending. Just based on the pilot, it's as good as Rescue Me, Dead Like Me or any other superior show on TV today. It's fantastic! I love this new show and can't help but wonder where the producers will go after disassembling our protagonist's life so quickly... Don't miss Journeyman when it debuts on NBC Monday, September 24th at 10:00pm ET/PT. Here's a preview:

It's
Always Sunny In Philadelphia - Season 3 I'm happy to say season 3 has won me over big time with some of the funniest, laugh-out-loud hilarious half-hours I've seen in a long time. It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia almost has a throwback quality, like the 'Family' sketches on The Carol Burnett Show, each set-up building to a comedy crescendo. The performances are flighty and overblown to say the least but the super-glue is provided by master comic actor Danny DeVito who never fails to elevate the proceedings even in those moments when the jokes misfire. Anytime I see a show that is produced, written, directed and starring the same person or persons (as is the case here) I know it's bound to be good. That's why I was so surprised not to like this series at first. Plus it airs on FX, and I love their original programming (The Shield, Rescue Me are the best dramas TV has to offer). I don't know if the off-beat style finally won me over or the show is getting better but season 3 of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia is not to be missed! The season opener where the morally challenged gang find a baby in a dumpster had me roaring as did the subsequent episodes. The scripts are first rate even if they do meander a bit at the beginning; this may be the funniest series on television today, I haven't seen a better sitcom anywhere on the dial. If you haven't viewed It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, check it out on Thursday, September 13th and I'll bet you'll be tuning in regularly. If you're a fan of the show, feel free to taunt me with, "I told you so."

BIONIC WOMAN
I was not a fan of the original 1970's Bionic Woman series, although it was a tad bit better than The Six Million Dollar Man, the show it was spun off from. This highly anticipated new version of Bionic Woman is brought to us by David Eick (Battlestar Galactica) and Jason Smilovic (Lucky Number Slevin) and, like the original, Jamie Sommers survives one hell of a car crash to be given high tech, super-human prosthetics to replace her useless limbs and right ear and eye. The price tag for the hardware has gone from 6 to 50 million dollars but this time around Miss Sommers has a wayward teenaged sister to contend with along with a general reluctance to be a freakish super woman confronted on all sides by shadowy adversaries. The bionic babe is played with a raw intensity by Michelle Ryan (Eastenders) who is surrounded by a strong supporting cast including Miguel Ferrer (Crossing Jordan) who always impresses as the swarthy bad guy, Chris Bowers (Rescue Me), and Mark Sheppard (Battlestar Galactica). There are multiple levels of intrigue at play, it's a little bit Terminator with a slice of Prison Break and some nasty government conspiracy elements thrown in for good measure. The special effects are terrific, the whole production has an oversaturated glow that gives the series an otherworldly presence. The pilot covers a lot of ground and, like any good drama, leaves a lot of unanswered questions. As a stand alone hour it's enjoyable, a little limp but it is capped off with a rousing bionic cat fight that's sure to please. Still, it's hard to know if this one's solid or not. Bionic Woman is already in trouble, one of the executive producers (Glen Morgan who worked on The X-Files) has quit citing "creative differences," rarely a good omen and production may be halted in order to, "give the writers a chance to focus on refining the show's directions." It's hardly fair to judge an expansive concept like this on just one just episode but Bionic Woman could be a real winner depending on where they go from here. Look for Bionic Woman starting Wednesday, September 26th at 9:00pm ET/PT. Tuesday,

WHAT
I'M WATCHING Big Love Season 1: This HBO dramedy is a curious duck. I like it very much but I'm just not sure why yet. This exceptional show about a polygamist Mormon family has garnered rave reviews and my friends are crazy about it as well so I'm enjoying the voyage of discovery. It's romantically icky and sports an amazing group of actors that includes Mary Kay Place (Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman), Bill Paxton, Harry Dean Stanton, and Bruce Dern. Friday Night Lights Season 1: I'm about halfway through this transcendent program and it is loaded with heart and soul. It's a tad predictable but for a network drama (NBC) it truly is a revelation. I'm a fan in general of sports movies, the film this series was based on is one of my favorites. This emotion-packed production is a magnificent adaptation that surpasses the original. I teared up more than once watching this one and almost bawled my way through the entire 7th episode. It's shows like this that could save network TV, Friday Night Lights is unbelievably awe inspiring. Heroes Season 1: Wow wow wow. This is one of my favorite TV experiences in a long, long time, superb in every way. A prime example of getting everything, every aspect of production, just right. I never believed anyone could pull off a super hero show for weekly television, it was a terribly ambitious concept. Can they hit that sweet spot again for season 2?The last three shows are new to DVD and what better way to watch them, when you can decide how much or how little you want at a time? I got hooked big time on Heroes and watched the whole thing over the weekend. Coming up: the new Bionic Woman on NBC - is it any good? Monday,
