WORST
TV COMMERCIAL EVER & MORE
Have you checked out the new Man From U.N.C.L.E. DVD collection? Me either. Adam Becvar has and shares his views here. Are
you going to be in LA next week? Looking for some laughs? From the press
release:
Comedy has long been one of the UK’s most acclaimed entertainment
exports, and this festival will honor the best of Britain’s film
and television comedies from 2007. Boy, is that going to be a great time - fantastic comedies all, if you haven't seen Little Britain or Hot Fuzz prepare to roll with laughter. Yesterday I posted a link to Sal Gomez' 1998 (or '99?) video tour of the Carpenter's home - I went back and recaptured that video so that you can see more of what's going on. You won't believe all the stuff that was left behind when Richard Carpenter closed the house, including the bed sister Karen slept in the morning she died. See below for more, here's the house tour: And a look at the garden and pool:
Finally, are you confused about who should be president? Basically it comes down to this - would you rather have Pebbles, Bamm Bamm or Mr. Slate for President? Wednesday,

OLD
BUSINESS That's a great point, Greg, not to mention ABC had recently flopped with Bill Cosby in a variety format aimed at the whole family. Who's to say The Cosby Show would have been a hit if it was broadcast on ABC, network nurturing and scheduling must have had some effect on the success of the show. After all, ABC was dropping the ball big time in 1984 after years of dominating the court. Michael Karol (author of Lucy A to Z: The Lucille Ball Encyclopedia) will be talking about Lucy on April 22 and 29, 10:30 p.m. - Midnight New York time on the Talking Television With Dave White program on KSAV internet radio - www.KSAV.org. Tune in! A few months ago, I mentioned Jon Konjoyan's crusade to save the Carpenter's home in Downey, CA, seen on the cover of the group's Now & Then album. He's been getting a lot of play in the media. You can see pictures of the house here. Is he getting any closer to his goal? Here's the site to keep up with the progress. Want to see a video of the inside of the home (in Real Player format)? Here's an oldie but goodie from the TVparty archives - Sal Gomez takes us on a trip through the Carpenter's Newville Avenue home: "I have included a tour of the former Carpenters home in Downey California. This was shot in 1999 as part of a tour package from a convention celebrating 30 years since the release of the 1st Carpenters album. The house (no longer owned by Richard Carpenter) is located on Newville Ave and is referred to as the Newville home. It was purchased by Richard and Karen in 1970, just after the success of the "Close To You" single, as a place where the brother and sister could live in and use as a home, office and rehearsal studio." IS A LUXURY "A
Democrat victory in November would turn back the clock on all that we
have accomplished..." "Few
people seem to appreciate it, but it's quite literally true that al-Qaeda's
strategy is to cripple the U.S. economy by dragging us into quagmires
abroad. Osama bin Laden himself has said this, and it's the only strategy
that makes sense. A smallish number of people with no base of resources
can't possibly defeat us unless we shoot ourselves in the foot repeatedly
as Bush and McCain propose.” "They
will take care of their own, which is why Bush was smiling, happily posed
in that photo op between Henry Paulson Jr. and Ben Bernanke announcing
the Bear Stearns bailout, made possible only by the federal government
using your tax dollars to pick up the bad debt of the banks. Tape that
picture to your wall to remind you, when you open a credit card bill with
a 30 percent interest rate—not the 2 percent the Fed will charge
banks—or see the increase in your adjustable rate mortgage, of just
what your government will do for the really big guys that it will never
do for regular folks." Monday,

SUNDAY
STUFF This is a segment from the CBS Sunday Morning program in 2007 on New Urbanism, something that sounds really lame to be a part of but I guess I am in that I try to walk everywhere and drive only once a week at most, when I need groceries. I gotta tell you, I love it, especially this time if year.
I live on the edge of downtown with a lovely historic neighborhood on the other side. Like most southern towns, our downtown was neglected in the 1970s & '80s - fortunately, because the storefronts built from the 1920s through the 1940s are still standing, looking as they once did. Developers from the 1990s until today have been restoring rather that destroying these architectural treasures. My small neighborhood is made up entirely of homes from the turn of the 20th century; the Blandwood House, built in 1775 and the oldest standing example of Italianate architecture in the United States, borders our small enclave to the north. If the weather's nice where you are, get out and walk around the neighborhood today. The pink Dogwoods and azaleas are stunning where I am. Drought and then lots of rain will do that, that's also true out in California where the hillsides erupt in crimson after a significant rainfall, making the drive from LA to San Francisco a visual treat. Funny, when I first started living here 10 years ago, people thought it was crazy; now I tell people I live downtown and they're impressed. Kind of like when I was living in Silver Lake from 1986-1994, it was mostly artists, musicians and Latinos at the time, now it's the hottest place in LA, Beverly Hills east. What I'm watching: I bought a DVD on Ebay with about 2 hours of The Gong Show from 1977 - wow, what a flashback! I'm also into the phenomenal new Adventures of Young Indiana Jones Volume 3 DVD set with an amazing array of Lucasfilm produced, full-length documentaries covering disparate subjects like Ernest Hemingway, the Algonquin roundtable, Edith Wharton, Eric Von Stroheim, John Ford, Ho Chi Min, Paul Robeson, Al Capone, and on and on. I'll have a full review later. Sunday,

DING
DONG!
Rudy Ray Moore had this to say in 2006 about his frequent use of the 'N' word back in the day: "I would like to send a message to everyone regarding the N word I can remember when I myself, Rudy Ray Moore, used to use that word. In the days it was quite popular, we used it towards each other all the time. As time passed though, I felt it to be more and more of an embarrasment. I stopped using it, I was one of the fore runners, and my act never suffered one bit. I convinced the late great Richard Pryor to abandon it's use and came behind him and applauded him publicly when he did. Paul Mooney has recently announced that he will no longer use it either. I commend him for it and wish to call on everyone else to follow." Saturday,

'N' PIZZA In 1984, Bill Cosby gave ABC-TV first shot at buying a sitcom he’d
created - and would star in - about an upscale black family. But ABC
turned him down, apparently "believing the show lacked bite and
that viewers wouldn’t watch an unrealistic portrayal of blacks
as wealthy, well-educated professionals." So Cosby sold his show to NBC instead. What happened? Nothing much
- The Cosby Show remained #1 show for four straight years, was a rating
winner throughout its eight-year run, lifted NBC from its 10-year status
as a last-place network to first place, resurrected TV comedy, and became
the most profitable series ever. CBS has announced their summer schedule and there's one classic TV throwback, look for Regis Philbin hosting Million Dollar Password. Password was a very entertaining program back in the day and could do quite well in primetime. 16 Secrets the Restaurant Industry Doesn't Want You to Know. Here's a sample:9. Papa John's ...doesn't want you to know that unlike rival chains such as Domino's, it has made little effort to introduce healthier options. A Papa John's representative admitted, "At this time, we have no additional regular menu items that are targeted toward eating lighter." Papa John's sucks! Come to think of it, are there any pizza chains that make a tasty pie? Pizza Hut is not that good but almost tastes like it used to, better that Dominos which I find totally inedible these days - and I used to love Dominos. A Hungry Howies is coming soon, I suspect it's in a league with Little Caesar. A local chain, Mellow Mushroom, is moving into my downtown neighborhood, I understand that's fine stuff. Thursday,

From the DVD cover it looks like the character has been modified considerably but this still suggests otherwise. Here's a trailer (in Windows Media) to whet your appetite, I'll have a review of Speed Racer the Next Generation: The Beginning soon. You can pre-order the DVD now. Entertainment Weekly's site asked this question of its readers: "Do you care that Project Runway is moving from Bravo to Lifetime?" 62% of respondents had reservations about whether the show will still be what they want to watch. Remember when 2 programs switched networks back in 1969? I'm thinking of Get Smart (NBC to CBS) and Ghost & Mrs. Muir (NBC to ABC), those shows really suffered because of the switch. The networks bought the productions because they were struggling and figured they could be turned around with some minor tweaking. Hence, Max and 99 gave birth and Mrs. Muir and the ghost (Captain Gregg) got romantic. Get Smart ran for 2 seasons on CBS, Ghost only 1 on ABC. Will Lifetime want to tweak Bravo's highest rated show? Clearly viewers are worried they will, the pressure will be on the production to deliver the best season of all this fall. UPDATE: Bravo announced their schedule today, including season 5 of Project Runway. Cue the lawyers. Remember the sci-fi hit Alien Nation on FOX back in 1989? That show was based on a motion picture of the same name but apparently there were 5 more Alien Nation telefilms made between 1994 and 1997. Good news for fans - they're out for the first time on DVD today. A review is forthcoming but here are some choice downloads from the telefilms. Alien
