AGAIN "(Would they be recognizable? Faces have changed on all of the above, but the formats are basically the same as they were the week TPIR premiered.) "btw, I was in grade school that week. I used to play sick whenever a new daytime show of any genre premiered. I, too, recorded audio of many of those shows, but unfortunately didn't keep the tapes. Thanks for the memories!" It's true, I should have put Today Show and Meet The Press on the list. But I doubt a viewer of the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite would recognize the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. Technologically speaking the nightly news shows would be virtually unrecognizable to someone from 35 years ago. When looking at a 1972 era soap opera and comparing it to today's fare the difference is shocking. For one thing it's all about young people today where as before it was all middle aged couples. 60 Minutes and The Price Is Right, on the other hand, still maintain the exact same format and graphic identity. Only the faces have changed and both - at least right now - have an original cast member (Bob Barker & Mike Wallace). Come to think of it, maybe Janice Pennington should host TPIR. Here's my question - are there any current soap operas that have cast members from 35 years ago? Friday,

NOTES VIEWERS CAN LAUGH 'N' SNIFF THEIR WAY THROUGH THIS SUPER-SIZED EPISODE VIA UNIQUE INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE - A special 'scented' insert card will be available on newsstands and to subscribers of TV Guide for viewers who want to "Laugh 'n' Sniff" their way through this episode of My Name Is Earl on Thursday, May 3rd. Play along and get a whiff of the action along with Earl (Jason Lee) and his cohorts. She jumped The View's ratings 18% with women viewers last year so it's no surprise that Rosie O'Donnell will likely host a new syndicated talk show. Telepictures, her former employer, is rumored to have a deal pending. She'll be entering a tough environment - overall household ratings for the daytime talk shows this season so far don't look good for Maury, Jerry and Montel. Could it be that the exploitational talk show era is passing? Finally? Oprah: 6.6 (- 7), Dr. Phil: 5.0 (- 4), Live With Regis & Kelly: 3.4 (- 3), Maury: 2.3 (-18), Ellen DeGeneres: 2.2 (- 8), Rachael Ray: 2.2, Jerry Springer: 1.7 (-15), Montel: 1.7 (-19), Tyra Banks: 1.4 (-13), Martha: 1.4 (-18), Dr. Keith: 1.0, Greg Behrendt: 0.8, Megan Mullally: 0.8. Tyra and Martha aren't looking too good either. I've actually enjoyed Tyra Bank's show the few times I've caught it and have to admit Rachael Ray is growing on me - in the sense that I can leave it on for 5 or 10 minutes if I'm in the kitchen. She seems to be the strongest contender, a solid hit for a freshman show. TVGuide.com’s Michael Ausiello has learned that Polly Bergen (Cape Fear, Commander in Chief) has been cast to play the saucy mother of Lynette Scavo (Felicity Huffman), while M*A*S*H alum Mike Farrell has been tapped to play Gabrielle Solis’ (Eva Longoria) soon-to-be father-in-law on Desperate Housewives. TPIR "I feel that the best replacement would be former Entertainment Tonight host and game show veteran, Bob Goen. The problem is that he left ET to spend more time with his family, but then a show like Price Is Right would be more suited for a family man. What has happened to Bob Goen since he left ET a few years ago?" Hey Paul - I'll bet TPIR pays better than ET! Kevin S. Butler adds: "I'm not too fond of the idea of John O'Hurley taking over a classic TV game show after watching him ruin the recent revival of another Mark Goodson classic, To Tell The Truth. I shudder at the thought, he will ruin the show and as I predicted before The Price Is Right will definitely go off the air after 35 years." The reason I'm fascinated with the story is that TPIR and 60 Minutes are the only shows on television that have lasted 35 years and would be still recognizable to someone from back then. I turned on a few minutes of The Price is Right while I was fixing lunch today. No question, retirement is the right thing for Bob Barker. I couldn't help but think that there will only be a few more months when I can turn on the TV and see Bob Barker. I tuned in for the very first broadcast in 1972 (and I taped the theme song on a cassette recorder that first week) and I've caught the show dozens of times over the years, mostly if I was eating lunch at home at the 11:00 hour. It truly is the end of a TV era. By the way, TPIR comes to DVD this summer. Until then, enjoy these You Tube videos:

TPIR What all this means is anyone's guess - could desperation be setting in over at CBS? If you ask me (and someone should some day) the show will have to be completely overhauled when the new host takes over. Same games but a whole new look. Speaking of classic game shows, this news comes from The Open Press:
