MINDLESS
MENCIA Known as a comedian that brazenly steals from others, Mencia squeezes out a variation on a recent Wanda Sykes joke, riffs on an old David Steinberg gag, delves into how gay our new superheroes are, and apparently signals that it's OK now to call people "beaners." Filmed at the Hard Rock Hotel in Hollywood, Florida (puke), if there's an ethnic group Mencia fails to insult it got past me. Truthfully, I don't see the point in his act. Why do we see Mencia every week but Paul Mooney is MIA? When Mooney performs race based humor he has a solid point of view, he cuts deep and wide, there's an underlying intelligence and inherent truth behind his cultural observations. Mencia's act on the other hand is superficial to the core, the same tired method of reinforcing familiar prejudices for cheap laughs - black folks are thin skinned, white people are ineffectual wimps, a lot of Mexicans can fit into a small place, homosexuals (even U.S. soldiers) are limp-wristed fashionistas, Asians eat dogs, vegans are hypocrites, Middle Easterners are fanatics, you get the idea. That's not all, Carlos offers up a stale routine on the 'N' word as if that subject hasn't been beaten to death. But hey, if he yells it loud enough it must be funny. Carlos Mencia - Performance Enhanced debuts Sunday May 16th at 9:00pm on Comedy Central. Consider this a warning. Monday,

TWO
REQUESTS Someone
else was using Froggy?!? "After the show was canceled Vince went on to appear in 50 more productions. His feature films included THE DEVIL'S BRIGADE co-starring with William Holden, THE DESPERADOS and the cult film HAMMERHEAD wherein he played "Charles Hood" a secret agent hero in a series of James Mayo popular novels. Eager to return to more meaningful work Vince made a "way ahead of it's time" TV movie called DIAL HOT LINE. This was so well reviewed and received that the ABC network took pains to have him to commit to a TV series based on the movie. Thus was born MATT LINCOLN. In 1970, the time of it's debut, it could not have been more topical. In a time of LAUGH-IN, HERE'S LUCY, etc. and a bounty of sitcoms ruled the air here was a show that addressed real mental health issues. We lived "in interesting times." With the assassinations of the Kennedys and Martin Luther King and the Viet-Nam War and the MARCH ON WASHINGTON and the newly coined fiscal term, "Stagflation," no wonder we had issues. But today as a practicing Psychologist and Senior Psychiatric Therapist I can report that MH issues were kept in the closet back then. While today it seems in vogue to be "Bi-Polar" or "Obsessive-Compulsive," and live in a world where it seems everyone has some kind of "syndrome." (None recognized by the DSM I hasten to add) my current favorite is "By-Stander Apathy Syndrome," where we are relieved from personal responsibility all of which does injustice to those suffering from serious Pervasive Personality Disorders....... there was a time 38 years ago where serious Mental Health issues were brought out into the open and on a fictional TV series no less. MATT LINCOLN was that show. "ABC, after going through all the effort to recruit Vince Edwards, who put his heart and soul into it, in it's infinite wisdom scheduled it on early Thursday evenings at 7:30 opposite two top ten variety shows, FLIP WILSON and the second season of THE JIM NABORS SHOW. They couldn't have picked a worse time. MATT LINCOLN typically dealt with college age students often reluctantly coming to a "walk-in" MH clinic desperately seeking help. Now I was a college student myself at the time and as most people in college I was rarely home to watch TV at 7:30 on a Thursday night. "I expected nothing when this show began but I made an effort to watch because I really liked Vince Edwards. I was more than amply rewarded and fixed my schedule to see this show. If you wonder what people were worried about in 1970, what caused anxiety and much worse; clinical depression you would do well to learn from MATT LINCOLN. The point being that these same root causes exist today and make the show just as vital now as it was then. ABC may have killed MATT LINCOLN but at least we had 16 episodes! In an age of the GAMESHOW NETWORK where Allen Ludden lives again, plus a network devoted entirely to Bass Fishing(no offence to Bass Fishers..it is a worthy channel) plus a channel that re-runs "reality shows," can't we find room for Vince Edwards and MATT LINCOLN. I just purchased a UNIVERSAL-NBC collection of a "nobody ever heard of" show called TATE which ran....16 episodes. The audience is waiting." If you agree, write to Universal - USHE.consumerrelations@bydeluxe.com - and ask them to add this show to their schedule. Meanwhile, here's part of the 1970 ABC fall season preview that features Matt Lincoln among others. Monday,

SCANDALS Seems the fellow in the passenger's seat - a former Marine who served in Iraq - needs lifetime care now because Hogan's kid was drinking and street racing, something he's been ticketed for on numerous occasions - two weeks before the accident he was doing 82 miles per hour in a construction zone. And the judge let Hulk Hogan testify in court wearing a bandana? Even Judge Judy would have thrown the guy out. Is a bandana proper dress for court now? Have you read about the guilty plea from KGO radio talk show host Bernie Ward for distributing child porn? Turns out there were allegations of improper behavior when he was a young priest. From CBS News: The U.S. Forest Service is looking for the "SpongeBob fanatics" who painted the cartoon character on the chimney of a historic building. The 10-foot tall painting of Nickelodeon character SpongeBob SquarePants is on a cabin in the Pike National Forest that used to be the Forest Service's tree nursery until it was abandoned in the 1930s. Forest Service law enforcement officer Tom Healy says the incident is part of an increase in vandalism in the area. Back To You and Aliens In America have been cancelled but the god-awful 'Till Death will be back for a third season. Saturday,

ON DVD Here is one preview for you - Windows Media / Quicktime. Of course, when those shows first aired they looked pretty crummy, thanks to spotty reception and primitive television sets with rabbit ear antennas. If first day sales on TVparty! are any indication this DVD set will be a big seller. Thursday,

Awwwww... With Mother’s Day just around the corner, The Minisode Network is showcasing some of the hottest cougars from classic television series. Whether you were hot and heavy for Bewitched’s Samantha Stephens (below), or had a thing for Peggy Bundy (to each his own, no judging), you can reconnect with your favorite M.I.L.F all this week with brand new minisodes of “Who’s the Boss,” “Married With Children,” “The Partridge Family,” and more, available on Crackle, YouTube, and MySpace. Check out your favorite TV Mamas in these short-but-sweet minisodes: In “Who’s The Boss,” Angela (Judith Light) and Tony (Tony Danza) are stunned when Mona (Katherine Helmond) sinks her claws into a younger man. In “The Jeffersons,” George (Sherman Hemsley) reels when he finds out that his mother is getting remarried. Two back to back minisodes of “Married with Children” find Peggy (Katey Sagal) and Marcy (Amanda Bearse) pregnant at the same time – Al’s (Ed O’Neill) worst nightmare. This looks like bad news: Casting Call: The 1970s variety show, The Gong Show is back with a new version on Comedy Central hosted by Dave Attell. The series will begin taping soon, so get your unusual, crazy, stupid human and pet tricks ready and send a link of your video-taped act to gongshowcasting@aol.com or contact Hedda Muskat, Casting Producer at 310-413-2861 to schedule a live audition in Los Angeles, Las Vegas or New York City. Personally, I loved The Gong Show, I was just watching some 1977 episodes and had a blast. We already have American Idol, so I would only watch this if Chuck Barris was back as host. He made the show, along with Gene, Gene the Dancing Machine and the fact that I was a teenager when the show aired. Bob Huggins adds about DVDs becoming collectable: "Your mention of the “Beanie and Cecil” DVD going for big bucks prompted me to check on a release that I have of “The Third Man” TV series with Michael Rennie. This DVD was released a few years ago in 2004 by Critics Choice Video and included just four episodes of far less than stellar quality, i.e., “typical” public domain visual quality. The low “used” price on this DVD is going for $34.00 at Amazon while a “new” unopened DVD goes for a whopping $79.96 for four episodes! I paid in the vicinity of $5 to $6 for this one when it was released. "Of course, you can still see episodes of “The Third Man” TV series at a far more reasonable price thanks to Timeless Media’s 2-DVD, 10-episode collection which, thankfully, is still available: "My VHS tape of the pilot episode of “The Invaders” starts at $19.95 at Amazon but will probably be rendered near worthless when season 1 of “The Invaders” is released on DVD on May 27th." All of our VHS tapes will be obsolete soon. They're only good for a couple of decades. I'll be curious to see how sales are on The Invaders. Based on pre-sales so far it looks good. Tuesday,
