SUNDAY NOSTALGIA
I was just watching The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet: Best of Ricky and Dave, a new DVD release from Shout! Factory. That reminded me that in 1973, 6 years after their long running sitcom ended, Ozzie & Harriet Nelson returned with Ozzie's Girls a syndicated series that had the empty nesters renting out Ricky and David's room to two college coeds, one white, one black.

A big 1950s nostalgia boom was underway in 1973 but this show never caught on and hasn't been seen since. It was a pleasing revival that lost little of the charm of The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet, retaining the same slow pace, only the set got a slight makeover (the Nelson's kitchen never changed in the 14 seasons they were on TV).

Here's the first part of the pilot to Ozzie's Girls, the other two parts are also posted on You Tube.

Also from 1970's syndication - one of my favorite game shows, The New Treasure Hunt, I just loved the way host Geoff Edwards used to fake out the contestants, he was a lot funnier that Howie Mandel is on Deal or No Deal. The top prize went to $50,000 by the end of the series, well over $200,000 in today's dollars.

Remember Tattletales from the same era? It followed Match Game in the afternoons in the mid-1970s. Tattletales was a hit but it wasn't when it was first attempted in 1970 as He Said, She Said.

SMOTHERED BROTHERS
I mentioned earlier that I'm really looking forward to the super Smothers Brothers - Best of Season 3 Uncensored DVD collection. One of the bonus features is a display of some of the actual notes from the CBS censors during the run of the controversial variety series. Here are two examples from the final season
:

Seeing Leigh French's name reminds me of how much I loved her hippy bit and the not-so-subtle pot references.

FRIDAY
Kevin Butler points us to the opening to ABC's Silver Anniversary in 1978, possibly the largest gathering of stars in TV history.

50 Freegan Lifestyle Habits for the Jobless is an interesting list of things you can do to enhance your life in these tough times.

One of my favorite big screen actors Harvey Keitel joins the cast of ABC's Life on Mars this fall - it's his first regularly scheduled series role.

THIS 'N' THAT
Sorry about not blogging the last couple of days, I had a deadline crunch. But I'm back!

An alert reader points us to this in-depth article on the old Battle of the Network Stars series.

Mad Men season 2 is getting underway on Sunday July 27, the Season 1 Finale is streaming online at AMCTV.com in three parts.

Also, exclusive Behind the Scenes content with Elisabeth Moth discussing her character Peggy can be found here.

I'm sure you've heard The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour is coming to DVD. From the press release: The controversial third season of the irreverent, intelligent, and undeniably funny '60 variety TV series finally sees the light of day via Time Life DVD (in spite of the censors). This DVD set has an impressive amount of rare, informative, historically important, and funny material.

The DVD set contains over five hours of bonus features, never-before-seen unedited content, extended interviews, audio perspectives, and more.

Clips - George Harrison guest stars with The Smothers Brothers:

The Doors sing "Touch Me":

Ray Charles and Jackie Mason sing the Blues:

FOR OUR FRIENDS UP NORTH
Friends of Old Time Radio is a wonderful organization and they're having an event this fall that you may wish to attend. From the press release:
Chuck McCann has in recent years become a fixture at old time radio conventions, even though he never appeared on dramatic radio himself, and is expected again this year the 2008 Friends of Old Time Radio Convention in Newark, NJ, October 23-26.

We feature four days of live recreations of classic radio programs, panels on the history of radio, celebrity interviews, music, memorabilia and sound effects demonstrations.

Simon Jones of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is also expected, as are Will Hutchins, star of the TV western "Sugarfoot," Arthur Anderson, the first Lucky Charms leprechaun, Rosemary Rice of "I Remember Mama" and more.

The Comic Con in San Diego gets all the press but this event promises to be a great deal of fun without the freaks and crushing crowds.

Bob Huggins adds: There’s another convention “up north” that fans of classic TV and films might enjoy attending. It’s the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention held in September in Aberdeen, MD (north of Baltimore) off I-95. Dates are September 18-20. Details here.
