Romper Room Romper Room was a popular educational kids TV shows here in NYC back in the 1950's, 60's, 70's, and 80's. WJZ (WABC) Ch. 7 was the first NYC based TV station to bring 'The Romper Room Classroom' to young TV viewers, seen weekday mornings on Ch. 7 from Monday, February 28, 1955 to Friday, December 14, 1956. Gloria Flood was the first host, those who were attending class in the WJZ-TV studios and those who were watching at home were engaged in games, songs, stories, craftmaking, educational segements and interviews with guest performers and personalities in between the plugs for Romper Room toys, educational items and old movie cartoons. During the fall of 1957, WNEW brought Romper Room to it's weekday morning schedule. The show was seen weekday mornings on Ch. 5 from Monday, October 25, 1957 to Friday, August 25, 1966. Joan Thayer (right) entertained and informed her students in the studio and at home for a numbers of years before she was replaced by Lousie Redfield. Ms. Redfield taught her RR students in between her plugs for RR items and the reruns of The Warner Brothers' Looney Tunes and Paul Terry 'Terry Tunes' movie cartoons. When the show moved to it's last location, WOR TV Ch. 9 on Monday, August 28, 1966, Ms. Louise Redfield continued to serve as the show's resident school teacher until she was replaced by Miss Mary Ann and finally by Ms. Molly McClocsky. Ms. McClocsky would not only host Romper Room weekday mornings on WOR Ch. 9, she would also MC the series in national syndication well into the 1990's. Miss Mary Ann would also manipulate a series of hand puppets: Up Up (an obnoxious Jack In The Box like wiseacre), Kimbell (a fightened Muppet like clone) and Granny (a wise Grandmother Cat Puppet). The show would continue to inform and entertain in between the reruns of Abbott & Costello, Simon In The Magic Land Of Chalk Drawings TV cartoons and Paddyington Bear puppet films until Ch. 9 closed down the Romper Room classroom on Friday, September 18, 1987. For a time, WCBS Ch. 2 in NYC reran WOR's Romper Room (retitled 'Romper Room & Friends') on Saturday mornings during the early 1990's. "I was just perusing your website, ( love early TV) and happened upon the, "Romper Room" show which my kids used to watch back in New York. And, truth be known, I used to watch with them because, well, Miss Mary Ann was rather easy on the eyes. "Be that as it may, I gave Mary Ann a call and she was kind enough to invite us down to the studio to watch the show live. I am pleased to say she was kind and gracious as she was attractive. I could however see she was under a lot of stress in dealing with a plethora of problem children and a rather demanding staff!" - Best always, -THE GABER-

Romper Room History
"BEFORE Miss Louise took over RR, there was another hostess named Miss Barbara. She was a blonde. "She left the show unexpectedly and Miss Louise took over. I vividly recall this as her departure was quite the topic of the day." - Thanks, Greg DO
