Romper Room History

PAGE ONE - Video and history

"I lived and breathed Romper Room! The tie-ins were heavily marketed when I was little, so I made sure to own the "Romper Stompers" (upside-down plastic yellow pails with green tubing which you'd tug to make them stay under your feet--Ralph Nader must have overlooked these).

"Also, I had the bottom-weighted inflatable Romper Room Punching Clown. He was bigger than I was, and would return my punches with a daunting smack. Still, he was from RR, and so was cherished.

Romper Room pictures"For drawings we had mailed in, my brother and I each received the special thank-you postcard with Do Bee in the corner and an ACTUAL hostess signature! My brother's was blue and was signed by "Miss Jane" (or some sweatshop worker) in blue ball-point pen. My postcard was green (much prettier, with better xerography) and was signed by "Miss Sally" (blue ball-point, again), whom my brother was by this time too old to worship.

"Routine and order were the keys to this show's "comfy" factor, so installments were only memorable when they were also somewhat frightening. When you'd see a kid throw a tantrum, and then become conspicuously absent after the commercial break, it could make the Juice and Cookie Time seem even more gloomily like communion rites.

"I particularly remember when I was five or six, that the Big Red Phone (which looked like a presidential hotline) rang on one show. My beloved Miss Sally answered it, and dramatically effected a fake conversation with the fire chief. "Oh, really? That's terrible! Yes, I'll be certain to tell the Children-At-Play!"

Romper Room"After hanging up the phone, she gathered the wide-eyed kiddies 'round and solemnly told them the fire chief's news: Somewhere, a child had LOOKED AT THE SUN and had HAD HIS EYES DAMAGED! So we must NEVER look at the sun! She was so heavy about it, that I now reason I must have been watching a franchised version from our local affiliate, and was being treated to a fake Miss Sally. She was simply too spooky to be national. And who even knew that sun-staring was within the fire chief's jurisdiction? My fake Miss Sally made sure that WE knew!

"For better or worse, this show shaped me (and they call GenXers jaded!). Thank you for listening!"

"I grew up in San Francisco, and was quite influenced by early kids TV. Every afternoon it was the Popeye based kids shows like Captain Satellite on KTVU, Mayor Art on KRON, and Marshall "J" on KPIX. I lived for 'em.

"Mornings were for Captain Kangaroo, and on the local level, Miss Nancy of Romper Room.

"Now, this local host seemed to lean toward the matriarchal type. . .a wee bit more, let's say - "controlling" to keep the kids in line. I met her during this time at a local department store - first thing she asked me was "well, are you a GOOD DO BEE? HMMMM?" Hell, I didn't know how to answer.

"At any rate, one morning, she seemed to have a rambunctious bunch on the set, and one kid (forgive me, but I do think his name was Billy) was cutting up more than Miss Nancy was accustomed to. Either that, or she was having a bad case of PMS, because at one point, she glared at him and yelled, "Billy, stop acting so STUPID!"

"I never watched the show after that."

Take care, Alan M

I came across this site via a search for info on the Romper Room show. I was searching for info on the show in L.A. around early 1972.

I was in Kindergarten at that time and was on the show and I would love to find a copy of it. Unfortunately, I can't remember the exact month or day the show was on that I was in. I do remember that we did Humpty Dumpty on the show and I had trouble climbing up on the table we had to sit on. :-)

Anyway, this is a great site! Would you have any advise on how I could find more info or who I could possibly contact about this? Seems kind of silly, I guess, but I'd love to find a copy of that show! You did such a great job on this site and I hoped that maybe you could help me.

Thanks for your time, Marlys

I hate to break it to you Marlys, but the Romper Room shows were erased each day to tape the next day's episode (that's when the show wasn't broadcast live). This was typical of all local kid shows.

You have a better chance of winning the lottery than finding your episode of Romper Room!

"Punch, Punch Puncher Ball
Punching's so much fun
Use your wrist
Hand and fist
And keep it on the run
Punch, punch Puncher Ball
Is really something to see
The roly-poly Puncher Ball
Keeps coming back to me!"

- Song for the punching clown

Romper Room Hostess

"I watched Romper Room with my kids back in the early sixties. They weren't as excited as I was to see my three year old's drawing displayed by Miss Louise one day, and to have her show a picture post card sent to her by my (then) five year old. I loved the kid shows beyond the point when my children were already losing interest in them. Does anyone remember Lucky Pup? It was a puppet show, and it was on in the late 40's, I believe, in New York City."

- Marlene P

"When the host of our local "Romper Room" would close each episode, she'd say: "Romper Bomper Stomper Boo, Tell me, Tell me Tell me Do....Magic Mirror, tell me today, are all my friends at home at play?" Then she'd go into naming kids. My mom wrote into the local TV station and requested my name be put on the list . . . it never happened. I think the hope of hearing my name is what kept me watching every week."
