It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia - Season 3 I've just screened some upcoming episodes of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and I'm pleased to say this show continues to get better with time. In fact, FX has the best original shows anywhere on the dial right now. If you haven't seen Sunny you should, everyone is talking about it; the program's attracting a legion of fans for the third season, a solid ratings hit for the network. It's a clever improv-based sitcom set in a bar that works by staying light - from the 1960's elevator music inspired theme to the silly plotlines. Not to mention the likeable cast that includes Danny DeVito, once again delightfully cast as a conscience-less cretin. All of the upcoming episodes hit the sweet spot; look for some gut-busting moments, especially during the episode where the gang sells the bar and goes to work at an Applebees type restaurant. Pure gold! Think of all the successful sitcoms that featured a bar as a major component - Cheers, of course, and Archie Bunker's Place but also Bewitched, Murphy Brown and dozens more. If you can make it work it's a natural setting for laughs. Heck, on Dallas and Dynasty the guys had bars in their offices and those shows are funny as hell. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia can be seen in back-to-back episodes Thursday nights at 10:00pm on FX. EARLIER REVIEWS: I had recently reviewed the season 1&2 DVD collection for this series and I just wasn't that impressed. That was my mindset when I tossed the first 4 episodes of season 3 into the player, these are the episodes you'll be seeing beginning Thursday, September 13th on FX. I'm happy to say season 3 has won me over big time with some of the funniest, laugh-out-loud hilarious half-hours I've seen in a long time. It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia almost has a throwback quality, like the 'Family' sketches on The Carol Burnett Show, each set-up building to a comedy crescendo. The performances are flighty and overblown to say the least but the super-glue is provided by master comic actor Danny DeVito who never fails to elevate the proceedings even in those moments when the jokes misfire. Anytime I see a show that is produced, written, directed and starring the same person or persons (as is the case here) I know it's bound to be good. That's why I was so surprised not to like this series at first. Plus it airs on FX, and I love their original programming (The Shield, Rescue Me - the best dramas TV has to offer). I don't know if the off-beat style finally won me over or the show is getting better but season 3 of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia is not to be missed! The season opener where the morally challenged gang find a baby in a dumpster had me roaring as did the subsequent episodes. The scripts are first rate even if they do meander a bit at the beginning; this may be the funniest series on television today, I haven't seen a better sitcom anywhere on the dial. If you haven't watched It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, check it out on Thursday, September 13th and I'll bet you'll be tuning in regularly. If you're a fan of the show, feel free to taunt me with, "I told you so." UPDATE: From Variety: "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" has started off big in its third primetime season on FX, soaring to its best numbers ever on Thursday: 2.3 million total viewers, of whom 77% were adults 18-49. Nielsen perf for the 10 o'clock half-hour is noteworthy
because of the unusually sharp increases from the second-season kickoff
on June 29, 2006 -- up 62% in total viewers and 77% in adults 18-49.
