Some happy caroler posted this 15 minute mashup of holiday commercials from 1982 including promos for cartoons like The Smurfs that were popular at the time. There's even a mention of The Gary Coleman Show, animated nonsense with the diminutive troubled actor cast as an angel. Right. Well, he is one now, isn't he? One of the most sought after Christmas gifts in 1982 was the Atari play system, there's a commercial here for the new E.T. game. Amazing how quaint 1982 looks from here!
For some reason Californians really loved their Miller's Outpost Christmas commercials. These two guys, Homer and J.R., starred in dozens of spots throughout the '70s & '80s. Here's one from 1984. Miller's Outpost was a major jeans and leisure wear chain in the '80s, like The Gap they saw sales drop dramatically when denim fell out of favor late in the decade. In the '90s, the company changed its name to Anchor Blue, in 2011 they went out of business.
Acclaimed dancer Geoffrey Holder was the face and voice for the Un-Cola in 1984, here's a Christmas themed 7-Up commercial.
Whether you shopped there or not you could not escape Kmart commercials during the holidays. They always had a deliberately cheap look to them but "Kmart is your saving place" was a winning campaign for a long time.
Swatch was the hot product line in 1987, The Fat Boys starred in this jam for the latest '80s fashion fad. There were so many - Guess, Ton Sur Ton, Member's Only, those MC Hammer pants.
You may think this 1988 commercial is a joke. But it's not. General Hospital heartthrob (hard to believe isn't it?) Tony Geary shows you exactly why I thought those Member's Only jackets were such an abomination and avoided at all costs anyone wearing one or even being in a place where someone was wearing one. I'm not kidding.
If you watched Rudolph and A Charlie Brown Christmas in 1986 you saw these holiday ads. Pretty cool someone saved those and You Tubed it. Did they ever retire that ultra-catchy Extra gum jingle? It lasted an extra, extra, extra long time!
A 1985 collection of commercials from December 16, 1985 including one of the seminal ads of the decade - Mikey for Life cereal.
