The King Family
1965 - 1966 / ABC

A TV show as it would have been done by your high school pep squad! The King Family was the definition of square in the 60s.

These kids made the Osmonds look rough and tough! Like grown-up Mouseketeers, they wear their names on their sweaters when they sing - you needed a score card, there were over 40 people in 'The King Family' group. This show replaced 'The Outer Limits' on Saturday nights, and it's hard to say which series was more bizarre.

One segment of the 1965 series had the group singing a medley of the top twenty hits of the week. The group's farcical renditions of Dylan and Stones tunes are classic in their ineptness. The show returned for a few months in 1969.

Mr. Roberts

Mr. Roberts
1965 - 1966 / NBC

Based on the hit play and movie - high-seas hijinks with Ensign Pulver, Mr. Roberts and the crew of the USS Reluctant during World war II. War movies were popular on TV in the mid-Sixties, but this light comedy failed to attract an audience.

"Exagerates and betrays every premise of the original" - Newsweek

Part of a Friday night line-up on NBC that included 'Camp Runamuck', 'Hank', 'Convoy', and 'The Man From UNCLE'.

Fractured Flickers

Fractured Flickers 1963 / syndicated

An incredible lost show! Produced by Jay Ward and Bill Scott ('Bullwinkle') and hosted by Hans Conried, this show strings together silent movie footage and overdubs comedy commentary. Also features the writers and classic voice-over artists (June Foray, Paul Frees) from the producer's earlier work. Really clever, but never became popular and is today completely forgotten.

One of the mini-movies

Hans interviews Roddy McDowell
Maybe the humor was too dry for Sixties' audiences.

"I'm an old Jay Ward fan. I'm a little taken aback by your statement that Fractured Flickers is now completely forgotten. I have great memories of that show and tell my kids about it ad nauseum each time we sit down to watch MST3K which I believe to be closest to FF in spirit.

Does this imply that I may be the only one who remembers "Sherman Oaks" and "The Minute Mystery"..."Brought to you by the makers of Spitz Beer, the beer that made Milwaukee famous simply because it's so much fun to spit." ???
