Dear
TVParty:
Do
you have any information on a children's pre-evening-news show on WRAL-Raleigh,
NC in the late 50s, early 60s, called "Captain Five?"
I
think that Captain Five may have been Lee Kinard, who is now a commentator
on WXII, Winston-Salem, occasionally, but I don't really know what he
is doing now fulltime. And I'm not at all sure that I'm right about
him, or his name.
Anyway,
Captain Five ran a 5:30-6:00 pm children's show in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel
Hill NC area. My sister and my brother and I attended a show in the
early 1960's (probably 1961 or 2).
Captain
Five was pushing Hostees Twinkees and was not pleased with me when I
didn't eat mine fast enough. Also, I lost one of the games on the show.
Not a happy day for me! But I would love to learn more about the show.
I
remember that watching cartoons (Huckleberry Hound, Deputy Dawg) was
an important part of the show.

A reader replies:
The name of the gentleman that played Captain Five was Herb Marks.
After the show he continued to work at the station in different positions.
He at one time assisted Mr Fred Fletcher the owner of the station.
I think he still lives in the Raleigh area. I am sure that you could
obtain additional information about Mr. Marks from someone at WRAL.
By the way Mr
Kinard worked at WFMY in Greensboro, N.C. He was a News man, host
of T V Matinee, and the Good Morning Show. Hope
this helps.
